About

Negative Press is a publisher of limited edition fine art prints by contemporary Australian artists.

From 2009–mid 2012 it operated as a custom print workshop, working on projects initiated by artists. In late 2012 Negative Press began commissioning artists to make new work in stencil, relief and intaglio techniques.

Negative Press is committed to reproduction and the multiple image and seeks to offer artists with little or no exposure to printmaking the opportunity to engage with the strengths and limitations of the print medium. While working within an established tradition of print publishing, Negative Press is interested in new forms of expression made possible by the multifarious techniques of printmaking.

Based on studio experiments undertaken in New York in 2010, this print edition continues Rose Nolan’s interest in using found text for both its formal and linguistic qualities. As shown with her work produced for Artist Proof #1 at Monash University Museum of Art, seemingly insignificant words or phrases are separated from the stream of continuous talk and given a fresh existence.
